If in doubt, paddle out, at the Battle For The Bay

Festival!

Go with the ‘flow’ this May at the Battle for the Bay Festival! Established in 2006, this energy driven event comes back with more fun and entertainment for all on the weekend of the 26th and 27th of May. The largest water sports competition will take place, nowhere else but at the Dollymount Beach in Clontarf, where you can watch and support the adrenaline-lovers that are taking part in this tournament. If you’re a fan of SUPing, Kitesurfing or any other water sports out there, this event is a must-see.

If you’re super keen to try out any of the sports, there will be qualified instructors on site to introduce you to the basic fundamentals of each activity. For those of you who just want to watch and have a good time, there will be live music, great food and drinks, followed by a lot of games and activities. Some of these include beach volleyball, mega funfair, SAND CASTLES and more. Not to mention the follow up late night parties in the area.

There will be entertainment for every age group and since there is no entrance fee, you have no excuse but to attend! So grab your beach towel, some sunscreen and head to Clontarf for a guaranteed fun, surprises and, of course, WATER!

For more information, check out the Battle For The Bay website on event details, stage lineups and more.

COMING HOME: ART AND THE GREAT HUNGER EXHIBITION

In the period from 1845 to 1849, Ireland was experiencing one of the biggest natural disasters in the history of Europe. The great famine, caused by a potato blight, killed over a million of victims, and an another million was forced to emigrate to the unknown lands. In result, the population of the country was reduced by, at least, one-quarter of the 9.2 million people. Even though Ireland was an integral part of the United Kingdom, the most powerful Member States of that era, did not grant too much help. Throughout the four years, people died from starvation, malnutrition, and diseases.

The Great Hunger exhibition at the Coach House Gallery, Dublin Castle, provides an insight into many aspects of the Great Irish Famine. Through amazing pieces of paintings, sculptures, audio and video tools, you get an idea of what life looked like back in those times. It also aids in the understanding of the terrific measures the Irish people had to go through in order to survive.

As Ireland is my second home, I decided to visit the exhibition to get a better understanding of my friend’s and co-worker’s past. The vivid imagery and the poem called “Slievemore: The Abandoned Village” by John F. Deane really touched me, and the short video led me to an edge of shedding a tear. It is heartbreaking to see how the lives of those people had changed over such a short period of time.

I strongly agree with the main message of the exhibition. The impacts of the famine should be stressed and reminded in order to cease the possibility of such disaster happening again. If you’re like me, and you prefer to take your time, reading and taking in the information slowly, then I highly advise you to go and visit the exhibition. It’s the real definition of beauty and pain. There are no entrance fees, therefore you have no excuses why you shouldn’t dedicate some of your time to see the artwork.

I experienced it, have you?

Marta.

Fuel up on some fab food in the area!

Hey there!

My name is Marta Kozimor. I am a new intern here at the Lazy Bike Tours. The blog is pretty much covered in cobwebs so it’s time to change that. I noticed that most of our tour attendees ask for food recommendations so I decided to put together a list of all my favorite spots for good food and coffee. After burning some calories on our bike tour, fuel up and regenerate for further adventures around the city.

1.Fire Restaurant

First up is this beauty. Best rated restaurant in Dublin for a reason. If you’re feeling fancy, pop down to the Fire restaurant down at Dawson Street. Great service, delicious food, and the outstanding decor will make you feel like a hundred bucks. Oh, and did I mention how good their Buffalo Ricotta Cheesecake is?

2. 777 Restaurant

If you’re a fan of Mexican food and a funky, cozy place where you know for sure will leave you fed and satisfied then the 777 restaurant is the place for you! It’s located on the South Great George’s street which is only a 6-minute walk from our Lazy Bike Tour company.

3.Feather Blade

Another great restaurant located on Dawson Street. A fan of steak? I sure am! A small restaurant in a great location with a simple (yet effective) menu. This is probably the only restaurant I visit at least once a month and I’m never disappointed.

4. Beanhive

The Ultimate place for breakfast and lunch. They serve good coffee too! Another food place on Dawson Street. It’s very close to our Lazy Bikes so if you’re feeling hungry after our tour or wish to try the famous “Irish breakfast”, you know where to go. The only downside? You could be waiting for a table as it’s so busy.

5.Cornucopia

As much as I love meat, I get sick of it sometimes. Cornucopia is a vegetarian and wholefood restaurant located on Wicklow Street. It’s also great if you are a coeliac or require a gluten-free diet. Don’t worry, you’re not signing up for just fruit and green leaves. The food will leave you full yet light, even after stuffing yourself with the gluten-free chocolate and hazelnut brownies, that happen to be my all-time favourite.

Dessert isn’t my only weakness. My love for a good cup of coffee is so much bigger than that! The places below are my all time favourite:

  • Mochaland Cafe- 20 Ormond Quay Lower, North City, Dublin 1
  • Queen of Tarts- Cow’s Ln, Dame St, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
  • Dwarf Jar Cafe- Grattan House, 1 Wellington Quay, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
  • Joy of Cha-10 Essex St E, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
  • Tamp & Stitch- Essex St W, Temple Bar, Dublin

I won’t go on about how great each one of them is as they’re all outstanding. Instead, I’ll let you try them and see for yourself. You’ll just have to trust me on that one.
